Types and Grades of HEPA Filters

If you have allergies or respiratory issues, the air quality in your home can make a big difference in how you feel. Traditional pleated and fiberglass air filters don't remove enough allergens from your air. This is where purchasing a HEPA filtering device is ideal.

What is a HEPA Filter?

HEPA stands for high efficiency particulate air filter. This particular device can remove 99.97% of all airborne particles that are .3 microns or bigger. Many of the components that these specialized devices trap are not visible to the human eye. The most harmful particles to the human body are the smallest ones. It only makes sense to use a HEPA device to protect you and your family from harm.

Grades of HEPA Filters

HEPA filters come in different grades that range from H10 all the way to H14. The higher the grade, the better its performance. Filters that have a grade from H10 to H12 are the true HEPA filters. These used to be the only ones that the average citizen could buy for their home.

Filters graded H13 to H14 are also known by HVAC professionals as medical grade. These filters are often found in industrial and medical manufacturing facilities. The H13 can remove 99.95% of all airborne particles that are .2 microns or bigger. H14 HEPAs remove 99.995% of particles that are .2 microns or bigger. These used to be only for industrial and medical use. But, they are now available to the average citizen for buy.

Which One Should You Choose?

With so many different HEPA grades on the market, you may find it hard to decide which one is best for your home. Your choice will come down to budget, current system setup, and desired capabilities. All these filtering devices are effective at reducing airborne pollutants inside a home.

Homeowners only need to invest in the lower grades of filtering products. They will get the job done fine. The larger H13 and H14 grades aren't always necessary for home use as they can be very expensive. Also, the higher the filtering capability, the more it restricts the air movement. Putting in one of the highest grades can overwork your system and cause premature wear and tear.
